Unless you typically camp when you are on vacation, camping in Atlantic City may not be on your radar. However, there are some really awesome RV parks and campgrounds near Atlantic City and at the Jersey Shore. And now with COVID-19 being a concern for many, camping is an excellent alternative to staying in a large hotel.

We’ve put together a list of 12 awesome campgrounds near Atlantic City and RV parks from Long Beach Island in Ocean County to Cape May NJ. Whether you looking to tent camp or glamp, there is a campsite on the list for you. We have large family-friendly RV parks with tons of amenities to smaller basic tent camping facilities. For visitors who want to stay close to the casinos, the Ocean City and Atlantic City boardwalks, fantastic dining, the beach, and the area’s family-friendly fun spots, your best option is to stay in Atlantic County. Pleasant Valley offers two cabins for rent. Each sleep a family of four, and have a private bedroom equipped with a double bed plus a futon in the main living area. Cabins also includes a full bath with shower, screened front porch, air conditioning, ceiling fan, and color cable TV. All cabins feature a fully equipped kitchen (pots, dishes, flatware, etc.) with a 3-burner stove, sink, small refrigerator, toaster oven, and coffee pot. If you don’t own an RV or are considering one but would like to try it before you commit, Pomona RV Park offer the option of renting a trailer for your vacation at the Jersey Shore. These unit have a queen bed in a private room, bunks in the other and include a bathroom, kitchen, TV, microwave, pots, dishes, silverware, bowls, coffee pot, toaster, and air conditioning. Outdoors you have a picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill.

If a trailer isn’t your style, Pomona RV Park also has a limited number of rustic cottages available for rent. These two bedroom cottages have one room with a queen size bed and a dresser. The other has a set of bunk beds and a dresser. Kitchens come equipped with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, microwave, refrigerator, coffee pot and a two-burner stove top (no oven). Additionally, the cabins have TVs, air conditioner/heat units, and a pull-out couch. Outside, you’ll find a picnic table, awning, fire ring and a charcoal BBQ grill.

In addition to cottage and trailer rentals, Pomona RV also has 16-foot yurts. These circular canvas cabins with a wood floors sleep 5 people and come equipped with a refrigerator, air conditioner, and TV. Outside you will find a charcoal grill, picnic table, and a fire ring.

This campground is all about spending time on the water. No, not the beach of Atlantic City or Brigantine but on the tranquil waters of the Egg Harbor River. Cast a line to catch your evening meal. Or spend the day tubing, kayaking, or canoeing on the river. Winding River offers both cabin and trailer rentals.

Cabins come furnished with one set of twin bunk beds, a full/twin bunk, air conditioner, space heater, compact refrigerator, microwave, three burner propane stovetop, sink, and toilet (no shower). Each cabin has a screened porch with a picnic table and outdoors you’ll find a barbecue grill.

Rental trailers come in a variety of different configurations. For details you will need to contact the rental office of Winding River.

Unique Features

Boat launch onto the Egg Harbor River which flows into Lake Lenape. Perfect for fishing, kayaking, tubing and small boat recreation. Transportation available.

Ocean County and Long Beach Island Camping

Long Beach Island (LBI) is about a 45-minute drive to Atlantic City. However, if you are not set on being too close to the casino action of Atlantic City then LBI could be a good option. A stay in Ocean County puts you close to Long Beach Island State Park and Barnegat Lighthouse. And Ocean County has some nice camping resorts with many amenities on-site with nearby nature activities.

Rentals

Sea Pirate rents both cabins and cottages for stays of 4 nights or more. All cottages sleep a family of 6 to 8 people (A family consists of two adults and your children under the age of 18). Four adults are the maximum allowed in the rental unit. Outside all cabins and cottage you’ll find a picnic table, fire ring, and charcoal cooking grill. All cabins have an outdoor water spigot.

Each cottage has a well-appointed full kitchens and full bathroom. And, they all have a large screened in porch for warm evening sans bugs. In each cottage you will find air conditioning for maximum comfort. 

  • Captain cottages offers hardwood floors throughout, French doors that open onto the screened in porch and granite countertops.  There’s a private bedroom with a queen size bed and television. The living area has a pull out couch, a gas fireplace and television. The unit has fully equipped kitchen with a toaster, microwave, coffee pot and dishwasher. And you will never need to head to the public showers because you have a full bathroom. 
  • One room cottage with loft -The living room area has a futon and television. Includes a cozy private bedroom with a queen size bed.  Kids can roll out their sleeping bags in the upstairs loft. 
  • Two room cottages have one bedroom with a queen sized bed. There are three different versions of the two bedroom cottage but all sleep a family of 6-8 people. And all have a futon in the living room to accomodate two people.  

Cabins are available at different comfort levels and in multiple sizes. However, all cabins sleep a family of six (A family consists of two adults and your children under the age of 18). Four adults are the maximum allowed in the cabins. 

  • Deluxe cabins have a private bedroom, full kitchen, and bath with sleeping space in the main room. These cabins also include AC and television.
  • Two-room Basic Cabin have separate sleeping quarters, one with two-bunk beds and the other a double bed. They come appointed with refrigerators, AC, TV and electric indoors. No bathroom or kitchen in unit.
  • Single room Basic Cabins come equipped with A/C, a small refrigerator, and a television. Again, no bathroom or kitchen in unit

Cape May Camping and RV Parks

From Atlantic City, Cape May is just a quick drive down the Garden State Parkway. A stay in Cape May puts you close to the city’s quaint Victorian downtown and beaches, as well as, the FREE beaches of Wildwood and the amusements of its boardwalk. Additionally, birders can enjoy both the Cape May Bird Observatory and the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. And don’t forget to visit the Cape May lighthouse.  

If you are stuck on KOA campgrounds, this is the closest one to Atlantic City. Situated on the outskirts of Cape May, you are just a short bike ride from the city’s beaches and shops. We used to camp in New York, just across the border at Lazy Lakes in Lewiston. I’m Canadian but feasibly it just isn’t possible anymore, which is too bad.
